Kingston's Mighty Wurlitzer
Built in 1928 and known as the King of Instruments, Kingston’s Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ has resided in City Hall since 1970. This amazing instrument comprises of around 1500 pipes, 20 percussive instruments along with a range of sound effects enabling the organist to replicate an entire orchestra.
Kingston’s Wurlitzer was the largest Theatre Organ to be brought into Australia from the United States at the time and was installed into Melbourne’s prestige’s State Theatre (now the Forum Theatre).
Our Wurlitzer is used for a number of civic functions as well as pre-show for a number of events that tour Kingston City Hall. The Wurlitzer is also featured in a number of solo performances each year including the International Youth Silent Film Festival.
To celebrate this amazing instrument, our City Organist Scott Harrison is offering a unique opportunity to tour the Wurlitzer and learn how it works, and you can even try your hand at playing it. Scott is also looking to train up some organists who will be able to perform on the Wurlitzer when required, along with learning how to assist with maintenance.
