Ghost Light Series - Artist Profile - Julia Davis

Julia / Good Sugar

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KINGSTON?

I have been a Kingston resident with my husband and two children for 7 years.  I love everything Kingston has to offer especially the beaches and natural world here.  I love how I can walk to the green belt in one direction and to the beach in the other direction. I love the fresh air, the down to earth people, the live music, great restaurants, cafes and speciality shops. There is so much to love about Kingston!

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PASSION/PRACTICE?

I am an actor/musician. An actor for stage/TV/radio and a singer/songwriter. I also sing in a band and write music for myself and others.

I have released an album titled Just, under Elvi Jean which is available to purchase on iTunes.

WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CRAFT?

Having started dancing at the age of 4, I fell in love with connecting to an audience and telling them a story. Standing on stage felt like being home!

After attending a performing arts high school I graduated from both:

- The Sydney Conservatory of Music (Composition) and

- Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Acting)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

I love sharing the same air in a space and connecting to a story that changes the way people think.

To be intimately connected to strangers whilst exploring different roles and genres.

To put a huge smile on the audiences faces, make them laugh and cry and feel like the world is smaller than we all believe it to be.

I have adored touring all over Australia and experiencing the incredible wonder of each small town and bustling city.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON DURING COVID-19?

I was rehearsing Alan Brough’s Charlie and the War Against the Grannies when COVID hit. Subsequently we had to cancel our shows at the Arts Centre in Melbourne and the Sydney Opera House.  This of course was devastating as it is an amazing show for kids with wonderful music set to rock your socks off. When we finally get to perform, I hope you are able able to get along to see it.

Most of my work has been in theatre, also writing and performing music. Although this has been a truly difficult time, there has been much to be gained going inward, particularly for artists.  I have been working on my music, writing new songs and recording.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AFTER COVID-19?

My industry has been hit very hard but luckily the show will be coming back next year which which is very exciting. I am really looking forward to getting back into rehearsing. I am also looking forward to going back and performing with the Good Sugar band.  We are a wonderful 6 piece dance band that perform mostly around Melbourne.

I am looking forward to getting into a rehearsal space and performing everywhere I can!  I have been cooped up for tooooo long in crazy lock-down town!

Hopefully most people have realised just how important the arts is when the world is in crisis. That we need to express our common frailty and understand who we are through are.
