WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KINGSTON?
MEJU is Megan Bernard and Kalju Tonuma. We run a recording studio/live performance space in Braeside.
The nature! We love the beach and we love Braeside Park - one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets. We also love the relaxed vibe and the friendly people.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PASSION/PRACTICE?
We are record producers and performers. We run a record label called Of One Kind and a recording studio/livestream venue called The B Side. Our music production team is called MEJU (pronounced “me-you”).
WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CRAFT?
Megan - I grew up in a musical family who sang Happy Birthday in four part harmony. My dad taught me guitar, my mum encouraged me to start writing songs when I was 12, and my grandfather would compose music for whatever instrument a family member was learning at the time. Mine was ‘Megan’s March’ for recorder!
Kalju - When I was young I would make mix tapes and write “recorded, mixed and produced” by Kalju Tonuma. This was before I even knew what that meant! The first instrument I learnt was piano, then I became a trumpet player, but I was always taken with drums, guitars and synthesisers as well.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST?
Oh dear, there are so many and it depends what day. We can’t not list the artists on our label - Anactoria, Khristian Mizzi, Datson + Hughes, Carl Pannuzzo, Kate Jukes & The Blue Healers. Outside of that Meshell Ndegeocello, Jeff Beck, Juana Molina, Imogen Heap, Thomas Dolby, Miles Davis, Brian Eno and Bjork.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
Making friends! We are so lucky to be able to both play music with and produce our artists. They are all incredible musicians and people who we just love hanging out with. We are fascinated by ‘flow’ and the creative process. Our studio is open plan so that you can be in the middle of eating something scrumptious that Kalju has whipped up, have a musical idea, record it, then get back to eating
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON DURING COVID-19?
Lucky for us we just finished building our studio before COVID-19. We have had our heads down producing songs for the label, writing new songs and playing music together. We have been hosting live stream concerts from The B Side when possible. We have also released five singles of our own as MEJU. Most recently ‘Used To Have A Job’ which is a collaboration with Pesky Bones (Peter Farnan of Boom Crash Opera).
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AFTER COVID-19?
We can’t wait to go on a road trip!
Kalju and I have an equal love of music which we came to from different sides. I started out as a songwriter/performer and he in studios engineering and then producing. I left country Victoria to study jazz guitar at age 17 and Kalju went into the recording studio at 19. Kalju has produced platinum and gold records for artists such as The Temper Trap, The Living End and Bodyjar. I play lead guitar for a variety of artists - most recently Khristian Mizzi and Yothu Yindi & The Treaty Project. We started our music production team MEJU 5 years ago.
