WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KINGSTON?
Mordialloc Theatre Company really appreciates the support given to us by Kingston residents. For over 70 years they have supported the theatre company in its endeavours to provide them with live theatrical entertainment. This continued support has made MTC one of the longest surviving community theatre companies.
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PASSION/PRACTICE?
We are a community theatre company which, in normal non-Covid years, presents five productions a year at the Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale. Every production involves the efforts of many people – actors, directors, technicians, costumers, set designers and builders and more. Each of these people might have a different passion, but the purpose is the same – to provide high quality theatre to our local community.
WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CRAFT?
People are attracted to community theatre companies for a range of reasons – curiosity as to how a show is put together, a need for a hobby, perhaps somewhere to socialise, but most of us stay for the same reason – a passionate commitment to community theatre and the promotion of broad community involvement in its production.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
Our reputation is one of a community theatre company of a high standard. This reputation has been achieved only by the dedicated and devoted efforts of the hundreds of men and women who have passed through our ranks since 1945. We are grateful for the foundations they established and upon which we still continue to build. The sense of achievement, the camaraderie of our teams, the pride we take in our work, and our enjoyment of providing theatre at a reasonable cost to our audiences are all highly satisfying to MTC members.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON DURING COVID-19?
We are currently rehearsing, via Zoom, a performance of 4,000 Miles, by Amy Herzog, with the hope of presenting it during 2021. Our Board of Management is also coming to terms with the staging and audience restrictions which we might have to work under once theatres are able to open again.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AFTER COVID-19?
Performing live for our 2,000+ loyal patrons and hearing once again their responses to the plays we present – laughter, tears, gasps of surprise.
Mordialloc Theatre Company was established in 1945, and after various venue changes established itself at Shirley Burke Theatre in 1962, where it has since presented about 300 diverse productions – dramas, comedies, farces, melodramas and even a couple of musicals. Our audience is derived not only from the City of Kingston, but also from people all over Melbourne and beyond. We average 1200 patrons per production, which equates to more than 360,000 “bums on seats” since our first Shirley Burke Theatre production!
