WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KINGSTON?
In December 2019, my partner and I bought a house in Parkdale, where we live and work with our 3 ½ year old daughter, our dog and our cat. I love the beaches! The soft sand, the small waves & the space. Parkdale especially has my heart. It has everything, the beach, the train, the amazing village-feel shops, great schools, and even our own theatre (The Shirley Burke Theatre).
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PASSION/PRACTICE?
I LAUGH, TALK & SING. I’m a comedian and writer of comedy and perform as my character - Jan van de Stool. I’m the Head Honcho of the Australian Musical Theatre Academy (AMTA). We connect talented students with the best musical theatre performers and creatives in Australia. And I write and perform in live theatre shows that tour Australia and Internationally through my business Amazon Woman Enterprises (AWE)
WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CRAFT?
Genetics, destiny and hard work. My Dad was an avid amateur performer and is an entrepreneur. My Mum supported him in his dreams. They both told me I could be and do whatever I put my mind to. So, luckily when at the age of 8 I said I wanted to write, create, sing and act, they supported me and I’ve worked toward them ever since.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST?
Writer Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love, fame). I love her writing, but I also love her philosophies on living as a creative artist and as a human in the world. She’s a creative thinker and giver and has given (and continues to give) me (and thousands of other people) so much.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I love connecting to people and affecting their lives in a positive way. Whether it’s making an audience laugh or feel in a performance or seeing a shift in a student’s creative work as a teacher and workshop provider – that’s what makes my heart full. I can’t wait to be more involved in the area – performing here and bringing world class performers and artists to performing arts students in Kingston.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON DURING COVID-19?
I’ve been working on my frame of mind so I can create my work and life in a post-COVID world. I’ve been resting, building resilience and working on feeling grateful and positive. Now I’m starting to create COVID-proof work: a live show connecting live and online audiences and a series of online webinars and workshops with famous musical theatre performers and creatives.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AFTER COVID-19?
Personally - seeing family & friends, travelling/going on a holiday, going to the theatre and movies and being able to smile again at people as I see them, not just with my eyes - but with my mouth - seeing people's glorious faces again. Professionally – I can’t wait to connect with an audience again and to run some workshops face to face in my studio in Parkdale.
