James Northfield

Unknown
Provenance:
James Northfield is renowned as one of Australia's most innovative poster artists of the 1900s. He began his training at Geelong Technical College and was apprenticed to the Melbourne printing firm of F.W. Niven. He set up his own studio in the early 1930s and established a reputation through his confident handling of new colour lithographic techniques. His posters featuring bright and contrasting colours were strongly informed by international modernism in their design. Following WWII Northfield began a career as a painter achieving success in this area with his impressionist landscapes. Today, Northfield's work continues to feature in survey exhibitions of 20th Century Austalian poster art.
