What's your relationship to Kingston?

I moved to Highett when I first got married, 13 years ago. I am the 3rd generation to live in Highett, we thought it was a gem having everything we wanted close by, the beach, great coastal walking paths, parks, bike paths and lovely cafes. There is nowhere else I would rather live. We have created our home here and are raising a family here too.

artist medium

I like to experiment with a lot of different mediums. My first love is drawing. It’s the base of all my art. I love printmaking by using techniques such as screen printing and lino cutting. I love painting on canvas and silk and I love sculpture, clay and mosaics. I also work with a select number of clients with graphic design work and publication design.

Describe your art or craft practice in a few sentences

I run three small creative businesses, these link and flow together beautifully.  These are; Spot of Yellow, which is a greeting card business, specialising in hand screen-printed goods. Spot.of.Art is an art/craft studio where mini artists are able to create art from my home studio. I run weekly art/craft workshops for children and also art therapy for people with disabilities and Spot.of.Design, this caters for graphic design clients, illustration and painting.

Artist bio

The love of art and the ability to draw well has characterised me from a young age - the owner of Spot of Yellow, I run three small creative businesses, these link and flow together beautifully. Spot of Yellow, Spot.of.Art and Spot.of.Design. Three creative businesses that flow beautifully together making my days filled with creative passion. I completed my Bachelor of Graphic Design at Swinburne University. I joined the corporate world working as a Graphic Designer/Art Director around Melbourne. On maternity leave 10 years ago, Spot of Yellow started with the goal of designing, hand screen-printing and selling my own uniquely hand screen-printed greeting cards. Covering all occasions, they can be found in many local retailers. On my second maternity leave Spot.of.Art was born. I’m very passionate about children creating art and enjoying skilled process based art learning, sparking children’s imagination. I teach a range of different mediums. I enjoy and practise my craft daily.

describe your creative business or arts group

In all three of my creative business I like to push the boundaries to find new creative paths.   Spot of Yellow - With greeting cards I experiment with different ways to make a mark – screen-printing, drawing or digital printing. For people to buy and send to their loved ones a special written note that can become a joyful keepsake.   Spot.of.Art - This is an art space focused on exploring creativity, whilst encouraging children to develop their own unique style and foster individuality. We explore a range of mediums such as drawing, painting, collage, mosaics, weaving, screen-printing, finger knitting, print making, clay and more.  Spot.of.Design - Here is where I create Graphic Designed logos, business cards, advertising materials and publication design for my clients. I also paint on canvas and try to be brave by holding a solo exhibition once a year. Art to me is about showing it, not keeping it stacked up in my studio.

what was your first experience of art?

I have always loved to draw and I always remember getting the colouring in books and turning the page over to the blank side so I could draw my own pictures!

How has the current situation changed your approach to making art and running your arts group?

Doing things differently than I have ever done before. Art classes online. This is a fantastic way for children to learn absolutely anywhere. Zoom enables me to still make art with children at home giving them a positive creative outlet. Selling greeting cards direct. Moved to digital print. Designing customised/personalised cards. My “iso” cards marking this time in history. More time to paint!

What motivates your creative business or arts group?

People, places, hobbies motivate me. I love capturing the moment in my sketchbook with simple line drawings, which create the base of all my designs. Using different mediums allows me to explore process art and a discovery of creative sensory play while learning new skills. Result has been creation of my own colourful, bold and beautiful style. Enjoying teaching my art students seeing their works.

What are you looking forward to after the pandemic?

Looking forward to hearing laughter in my studio once again from my very happy creative students. They bring such joy and positive vibes to my studio, which also helps their mindfulness. I’m excited to be able to go to the shops and wholesale my greeting cards and chat with the owners. To be able to walk in to an art supply store and buy my materials off the shelf! Also, to go to my favourite café.
