Noitsuahxe: Nahbananas

Nahbananas Noitsuahxe Event

Noitsuahxe (pronounced noit-su-ah-ae) is an exhibition by Nahbananas that delves into themes of ecological fragility and restoration. Through a combination of multi-dimensional sculptures and immersive video art, the exhibition reflects on the devastation of Victoria's logged areas while symbolising hope for renewal.

Derived from the mirrored word "exhaustion," the title evokes a dual narrative—acknowledging environmental decline while offering a path toward restoration. The works merge analogue craftsmanship with digital technology, creating a dialogue between the tactile and the intangible. Visitors will encounter natural materials such as paper, tree bark and leaves, foraged locally to emphasise sustainability and the interconnectedness of the natural world.

The centrepiece of Noitsuahxe features video projections of logged landscapes cascading across scrolls of paper, transforming the gallery into a poignant space for reflection. Surrounding sculptures amplify the themes of decay and impermanence, reminding viewers of the urgent need for ecological care.

This immersive installation invites contemplation on environmental responsibility, blending sensory elements to inspire action and connection. By exploring the "making and unmaking" of our natural surroundings, Nahbanana's work encourages us to envision a sustainable future while appreciating the delicate beauty of our impermanent world.

Opening event

Join us to celebrate the opening of this exhibition on Saturday 18 January 2pm to 4pm at the Kingston Arts Centre, Moorabbin.

Artist Statement

Nahbananas is a Chinese Singaporean textile artist who is curious about the various rhythms of work such as play, research, make, create, contemplate and rest.  She sources materials primarily from her surroundings, often drawing from nature and domestic waste. Her work aims to breathe new life into these materials as an act of hope and rejuvenation, encouraging a deeper reflection on our relationships with materials, forms, and objects, and the meanings and values we ascribe to them. Her practice invites viewers to contemplate the passage of time with the emphasis on human fragility and impermanence that is interwoven in our everyday lives.
