LANEWAY LEARNING WORKSHOPS 

Laneway Learning workshops are affordable, informal and are taught by ordinary people from the local community; florists teach about flowers, scientists about science and bookworms about books. Attending them is less about becoming an expert overnight and more about getting some top tips to take home and practice later.

Crochet for Beginners

Monday 6 May, 6:30pm - 8pm

Learn the art of crochet and adorn yourself and your home in crochet goodness this winter. Crochet is not just for your grandma! In this class you’ll learn the basics of crochet and develop skills that you can use to create many crochet projects on your own including teapot covers, crop tops, dolls and beautiful blankets. And yes, granny squares too. 

What will we cover? 

  •  How to hold your crochet hook and how to tie a slip knot 
  •  Learn how to ‘chain’ which is the basis of all crochet projects 
  •  The single and (time permitting) double crochet stitches. 

This class is suitable for beginners.  

Who will be Teaching? 

Maria Yebra has crafted many weird and wonderful things since getting hooked on crochet, and she shows no signs of stopping! In addition to crochet and crafting, she also has a passion for cooking and baking, light painting, Spanish shoes and running Laneway Learning.

Plant Pot Collage

Monday 13 May, 6:30pm - 8pm

Learn how to collage onto terracotta to create a unique plant pot. Collage as a medium allows us to take chaos from the world around us and transform it into art. Using old magazines, books, paint and fabrics, this workshop will be a collaborative space to explore creativity and produce a work of art. Collagers will leave with a personalised collage pot, sealed and ready to use as a plant pot. 

This hands-on creative class will include: 

  •  An introduction to different collage styles for inspiration. 
  •  Pot decorating time. 
  •  Pot waterproofing time. 
  •  An opportunity to share your work with the class. 

Who will be Teaching? 

Astrid (She/Her) is a collage maker, passionate about sharing the joys of creating art. In 2021 Astrid published her first collage Zine in collaboration with Melbourne band The Spaghetti Stains and has since created artwork for other local musicians. Astrid specialises in creating large-scale collage pieces and digital collages using paint, crayons, photographs and her beloved 1970s ballerina book.

Polymer Clay Accessories Workshop

Monday 20 May, 6:30pm - 8pm

Learn how to make accessories with polymer clay and create your own pair of earrings. Polymer clay is an accessible, colourful and versatile material that’s a lot of fun to use, but even better with some introductory tips to get you going. 

There are different types of clays, varying bake times as well as different techniques to create shapes, blend colours, emboss and to express your colourful ideas! We’ll teach you the basics and you’ll create your own pair of polymer earrings with your choice of backing (studs, hooks or clip-on). There are no rules when it comes to your design – big, bold, mis-matching – whatever you create is uniquely yours! 

In this class you’ll learn how to: 

  •  Condition the clay 
  •  Mix the colours 
  •  Create a marble effect 
  •  Use jewellery connectors 
  •  Bake the polymer, plus tips on how to do this at home

Dry Felting 101: Mushrooms

Monday 27 May, 6:30pm - 8pm

In this beginner class you’ll learn the basics of needle felting and create some cute mushrooms. 

Needle felting is the simple process of turning loose wool into a solid felt using a barbed needle. It’s an easy craft to learn and doesn’t require extensive equipment. You can create toys, ornaments and decorations and enjoy this cosy hobby in Melbourne’s chilly months. To coincide with Autumn, we’ll be learning to dry felt cute mushrooms! You can choose your own colour combinations and personalise your mushroom, while learning the two basic structures that 3D needle felting relies upon – circles and logs. Make one, or a few! All materials are provided to get started, including needles and felting block to take home. 

You’ll learn: 

  •  The basics of needle felting
  • Different tools, materials and their purposes 
  • The two basic forms for 3D object felting 
  • Ideas and examples for future projects 
  • Where to source materials/resources 

Who will be Teaching? 

Heather (she/her) loves crafting and loves sharing it with others. She was first asked to teach in 1998, to fill-in during her daughter’s art class at Williamstown Community House and she's been teaching arts and crafts ever since. Heather currently holds weekly crafting classes. Heather is a content contributor for Get Creative magazine and has contributed projects for multiple craft books.
