New Riviera, a permanent bronze artwork by Melbourne artist Julie Shiels, transforms the familiar form of the deck chair into something both surprising and enduring. By casting the everyday object in bronze, Shiels invites viewers of all ages to reflect on Mentone’s beach culture, history and Italian influences, while also encouraging them to see the ordinary in new ways. She intended the work to create a space for relaxation and contemplation within the piazza.
Constructed locally at the Perrin Sculpture Foundry in Cheltenham, New Riviera was selected by community members and installed as part of the Mentone Renaissance redevelopment in 2018.
