Learn to darn
Next date: Monday, 13 July 2026 | 06:30 PM
to 08:00 PM
Being able to mend our clothes is an important skill that serves us throughout life, whether it’s repairing that denim jacket, darning some woolly socks, reinforcing elbows or the dreaded crotch mend! It gives our favourite items of clothing extra life and longevity, retaining those memories.
Sometimes subtlety is key but sometimes it’s 'go big or go home': so why not mend visibly, colourfully, playfully and beautifully. Without a doubt when others see your darning repairs, they’ll ask how you did it! Darning is not that tricky, and well worth learning.
Perhaps you’ve pulled your woollens out for winter and noticed a few moth holes, this is definitely the class for you.
This workshop will cover:
- what kinds of repairs lend themselves to be darned
- different darning techniques depending on the type of hole, wear or tear
- how and when to prepare the edges of a hole for darning
- the darning egg and other tools of the trade.
All tools are provided, but please bring in an item to get to work on. We suggest clean worn-out socks or something with worn elbows. Or you can learn and practice with sample fabric provided. No sewing experience necessary.
