Make a Sea Star with Bianca Easton

Two First Nations people each holding a handmade sea star from repurposed fishing nets

Celebrate NAIDOC Week with this hands-on workshop, transforming ropes and nets collected from Nerm (Port Phillip Bay) into a sea star inspired by the Bay's rich marine life.

Artist and workshop facilitator Bianca Easton (BoonWurrung) draws on practices from Erub Island, where ghost nets and marine plastics are used to create artwork. Bianca learnt this practice from Uncle Jimmy John Thariday of Erub Island and has his permission to share and teach it.

The sea star design is inspired by species found in Nerm (Port Phillip Bay), home to a variety of native sea stars, including several five-armed species, as well as the invasive Northern Pacific seastar, which has had significant impacts on local marine ecosystems.

This workshop is usually best suited for children over ten years old, teens and adults. Children under ten, or children over ten with fine motor skill issues will require parental assistance.

Who will be teaching?

Bianca Easton is a proud BoonWurrung Woman who is an artist, weaver, works with possum skins and mixed media. She is also a Cultural Educator and facilitator who runs workshops, activations and education sessions in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, universities, corporations and public events.

Bianca was born in Naarm and raised around the coast of the Bay. The coastline, waterways, plants, animals and Country in general inform her ever evolving art practice and she is always looking to learn more. She has been very grateful and fortunate to learn from Elders and other Community members and now enjoys teaching others, especially the next generation.

Bianca is passionate about art and creativity and believes these practices are incredibly healing and an important way to express yourself, connect with your Community, express Culture and a valuable tool to help deal with trauma and to exercise self-care.
