Artist Geoffrey Carran’s mural celebrates the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, a migratory bird that travels annually from Siberia to the Edithvale Wetlands. Recognised as a Ramsar-listed site of international significance, the wetlands provide crucial habitat, supporting over 1% of the global Sharp-tailed Sandpiper population. The artwork was developed in consultation with local community members, the Friends of Edithvale Wetlands, and users of the sports centre.
As part of Council’s long-term planning for Chelsea, community feedback highlighted the desire for a new mural in The Strand to help enliven the streetscape.
