Colour & Letterform: ink and calligraphy workshop

Next date: Saturday, 22 August 2026 | 01:00 PM to 01:50 PM

Four vertical strips of paper with abstract artwork in different coloured inks

Experience the meeting of colour, movement, and letterform in this contemporary mixed-media workshop facilitated by current Magnify artist in residence Kiki Lo.  Using alcohol ink and pointed pen calligraphy, participants will explore abstract expression through colour selection, composition, and expressive lettering.

All materials and tools required for the drop-in session will be provided free of charge for public participants, including paints, inks, brushes, synthetic paper for alcohol ink, and canvas paper for acrylic painting. Suitable for beginners, this workshop encourages creative exploration while guiding participants to create a finished artwork to take home.

Who will be teaching?

Kiki is a Melbourne-based contemporary calligraphy and mixed media artist, born and raised in Hong Kong. Influenced by the expressive qualities of lettering, colour, and mark-making, she combines calligraphy, alcohol ink, acrylic painting, and mixed media to create artworks that blend lettering with abstract art. Her work explores how words, colours, and marks can communicate ideas, memories, and experiences beyond traditional handwriting and calligraphy.

With a deep appreciation for calligraphy, colour, and handmade craftsmanship, Kiki creates artworks that bridge traditional lettering and contemporary abstraction. Her work often begins with letterforms and develops through layers of colour, texture, and movement, resulting in compositions that are visually engaging and open to interpretation. She hopes her work encourages viewers to pause, look closely, and find enjoyment in the details.

Alongside her studio practice, Kiki is passionate about making art accessible and engaging for diverse communities. Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, she enjoys connecting with people through workshops, artist talks, and public programs that encourage creativity, curiosity, and the enjoyment of making art.

Kiki also offers bespoke calligraphy services for weddings stationery, special events, commissioned artworks, and corporate workshops. Through these projects, she enjoys creating meaningful and memorable experiences through the art of lettering.
