The Resonant Heart

The Resonant Heart is a multi-disciplinary ensemble of international women and female-identifying artists, uniting to share their rich cultural and artistic heritage through live performance. The Heart Whispers and Whirls is a mesmerising kaleidoscope of multi-lingual poetry, folk songs, dance, and shadow puppetry. 


The Resonant Heart comprises of Sudanese poet Nyaluelit ‘Lizzy’ Kuoth, Indian sitarist Sarita McHarg, Iranian artists Vahideh Eisaei and Elnaz Sheshgelani, and the Balkan and Sephardic Jewish music trio Saray Iluminado Femme, featuring vocalist Nela Trifkovic, and instrumentalists Irine Vela and Kelly Dowall.

The event will feature a post-show Q and A with the artists. Due to the diversity of the ensemble, languages available for Q and A include English, Hindi, Farsi, Nuer, Greek, Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian.

Spend an afternoon with the Resonant Heart artists, learning about traditional performance forms from around the globe. 

Songs from the rose garden - an introduction to bosnian sevdah and sephardic jewish romances

Join Bosnian-Australian singer Nela Trifkovic and her colleagues from SARAY Iluminado Femme in a dynamic and vocal workshop introducing you to Sevdah, the traditional vocal form from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sephardic Jewish Romances (secular women’s songs). 

A vocal workshop for community musicians and professionals alike. The workshop commences with introductory language coaching, focusing on songs lyrics. Learn about the grooves and rhythms of the repertoire through interactive physical exercises and body percussion, and delve into the melodic and harmonic lines of the songs. Enjoy exploring a new world of language and song!

The beauty of indian songs

Be introduced to the subtle beauty of Indian folk singing from the North with Dr Sarita McHarg. Drawing on her experience of growing up in a family of professional performers and culture-keepers of classical and folk traditions, Sarita teaches folk songs of her motherland with lightness, ease, and humour. This is workshop is suitable for all levels of experience, and includes a basic introduction to language, simple but effective physical exercises, and vocal exercises for sound production and comprehension.

Naghali (persian movement theatre)

This workshop is about movement/body and music/human-voice in Persian dramatic storytelling, an ancient style of performing arts in Persia (Iran). This workshop is accessible to a diverse range of participants, regardless of cultural background. 

Persian dramatic storytelling (Naghali/Gōsan) will be taught with the help of a unique visual tool, called “adamak-tion”, and Persian folkloric music. Come and explore movement and gesture in an afternoon filled with curiosity, and move to the enchanting sounds of the Persian zither-style instrument – qanun.
