'Hand me down' by Andrew Duong

Next date: Friday, 04 September 2026 | 11:00 AM to 04:00 PM

A photo of part of a painting that depicts four people in wedding attire. From left to right a young child is in a white dress, a woman is in a red dress sitting, a man in dark suit is sitting, and another child is standing in a grey suit - who is the focus of the image, with other people obscured by the crop of this image.

Exhibiting a series of paintings exploring inherited items and their cultural significance through an Australian-Cambodian-Chinese lens.

Paintings reference stories of second-generation migrants and people born in the 90s, through a playful tone that speaks to values of sharing, appreciation and family.

The paintings reference personal hand me downs including the grey suit worn by three different cousins, the same 50 dollar note traded between siblings on birthdays and the CASIO watch from the father who is never late. The works give new life to these items, and recreates those that have been lost or passed on.

Through these pieces, anecdotes weave together traditions and practices shaped by childhood memory, tracing how they continue to inform present-day understandings of culture and self.
