Paint your story

Next date: Wednesday, 16 September 2026 | 06:00 PM to 08:00 PM

A painting of a group of assorted colourful toys including teddy bears and dolls

Join exhibiting artist Andrew Duong for a painting workshop that invites you to transform personal objects, photographs and keepsakes into artworks exploring memory and storytelling.

Andrew explores themes such as hand-me-downs, upcycled clothing, family photos and the Asian diaspora in his exhibition Hand me down. During the workshop, he will demonstrate the process behind creating his deeply personal paintings.

Through guided exercises and painting techniques, you will be inspired to create your own painting, weaving together the visuals of your subject with the stories and meanings they carry.

Participants are invited to bring your own personal items to the workshop such as photos, items, or a combination of both, to inspire your painting.  Andrew will also have a range of items ready if you need something to work with. Towards the end of the workshop you will have the opportunity to share your inspiration and stories with each other.

Who will be teaching?

Andrew Duong is an artist based in Boonwurrung and Bunurong lands in Noble Park, whose work is driven by his perspective as a second-generation Cambodian. His work often pays homage to the family through past stories and their connection to current political issues.

Through a process of piecing together historical footage, mass media, photography, family anecdotes, and text, Andrew attempts to translate and connect stories through painting and installation.
