'Refugia' by Kerri Wilson McConchie

Next date: Friday, 04 September 2026 | 05:00 PM to Saturday, 31 October 2026 | 05:00 AM

A video still of scattered yellow everlasting daisy buds and flowers against a black background.

A collage of indigenous flora endemic to the region of the Bunurong Land is transformed into moving image sequences—projected onto Kingston Town Hall—that evoke a reimagined ‘wildlife corridor,’ a habitat crucial for the survival of the region’s endangered floristic communities.

Refugia explores the indigenous flora of the sand heathlands, a habitat classified as endangered in the Kingston region. Selected plant material is gathered and scanned or photographed to create choreographed sequences of moving image that form a reimagined wildlife corridor. Such corridors are vital for maintaining biodiversity and ecological connectivity.

The title Refugia refers to habitats that provide protection for threatened floristic communities—here, the fragile sand heathlands. The work moves between vibrant growth and gradual decay, reflecting the vulnerability of endangered species and the fragility of life in the face of environmental damage and neglect.

About the artist

Kerri Wilson McConchie is a Naarm/Melbourne-based visual artist whose practice centres on drawing and moving image. Her audio‑visual and projection-based works bring together the material qualities of analogue drawing and printed imagery with digital processes, exploring states of transition through abstract, animated narratives. Working primarily through installation, she creates immersive, multi-sensory environments that invite participation, contemplation, and reflection. Across her practice, she engages with themes of human vulnerability, interpersonal connection, and our precarious relationship with the natural environment.
