Sonic Maps Soundwalk Workshop by Lucy Allinson

A photo taken in Point Addis of artist Lucy Allinson with her sound equipment.

This workshop offers an immersive insight into Lucy Allinson’s practice, guiding participants on a journey from the gallery to the bay and surrounding urban parklands. Through a guided sound walk, participants will experience how an acoustic ecologist engages with the landscape—what they listen for, how they record—and gain insight into Lucy’s research comparing urban environments and national parklands, alongside drawing exercises and group discussions that invite reflection on these themes. Discover what noise pollution is, the impact it has on our ecosystems, and how it is reshaping our landscapes.

Please note, this is a walking event, where participants should expect to spend about 90 minutes walking (maximum 2.5km) around the Parkdale area near G3 Gallery during the workshop.

In case of bad weather the workshop will still go ahead, but the format will adjust to an indoor workshop.

Lucy Allinson’s exhibition 'A Timeline of Listening' is on display on the G3 Gallery from Friday 10 April.

About the artist

Lucy Allinson’s practice is multidisciplinary, spanning sound, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation. It stems from an ongoing investigation into the effects of noise pollution on natural systems, with a particular focus on birdsong.

Over the past eight years, Lucy has investigated the contrasts between urban environments and national parklands through sound ecology—mapping, recording, and analysing soundscapes across Melbourne, Geelong, and the Surf Coast. These field studies reveal the shifting dynamics between built and natural worlds and their impact on ecological balance.

Lucy’s visual works—whether drawings, paintings, photographs, or sculptures—are grounded in these recordings. Each piece responds to the atmosphere, colour, and rhythm of place, while also acknowledging the marks of disturbance that noise brings. In this way, her practice moves between scientific inquiry and artistic response, presenting audiences with multiple perspectives on the same subject.
